If thermostats hitting the 20+ Celsius mark isn’t the cue to start your patio engines, what is?
Now that the days are longer and more filled with sunshine, heat and hope, we’ve realized we are way behind getting our patios set up for the summer entertaining season.
Even if that entertaining is just you kicking back after work with your feet up and your hand wrapped around an ice-cold guava marg, the time has come to outfit those urban balconies with all the accoutrements you’ll need to maximize your outdoor time (and joy!) as much as possible this summer.
Here are some of our favourite decor pieces to turn your deck into an oasis...
1. Henry Indoor-Outdoor Rattan Pendant Light, CB2, $140
This ornately woven pendant light in faux rattan (it's really powder-coated steel) from CB2 transforms outdoor patios into the subtropics, but is easy to maintain, too. Bonus: it’s battery powered so you can hang it and love it anywhere—no strings attached.
2. Terrazzo Print Napkins, West Elm, $33
Oversized terrazzo-print colour blocks in dusty pinks, grey, charcoal and marigold add a fresh pop to outdoor table settings (and the terrazzo trend!). Bright idea: score an extra set of these napkins as a hostess gift for your friend’s upcoming soirée.
3. Mastholmen Coffee Table, Ikea, $95
You can expect to see this cane-style bamboo rattan look everywhere in outdoor furnishings soon, but you’ll know that you got your on-point handmade design for an even more fabulous price with this one from Ikea.
4. Watermelon and Lemon Outdoor/Indoor Toss Cushions, Walmart, $10 each
Sometimes the international superstore mega-chain gets it exactly right. Imagine these juicy jumbo fruit-slice pillows—in lemon and watermelon—(in all-weather material) scattered around the patio or poolside deck? Just. Darling.
5. Canvas Luna String Lights, Canadian Tire, $35
We’ve done quite a bit of shopping around for the perfect patio lights, and this set from Canadian Tire is durable, has cute bubble bulbs and at 25 lights on the string, you’ll get enough length to actually extend across the patio for a reasonable price.
6. Havsten Outdoor Sofa, Ikea, $620
Ikea, you’ve done it again. While we were very tempted to go rattan everything, the promise of the Havsten outdoor sofa was too good to pass up. Canvas-frame armrests and wire legs make for a slim profile, so it’s a boon to cramped condo patios. Plus, its outdoor-proof white cushions are plush and cozy, making it look far more luxe and expensive for a patio set that should clock in well over $1,000.
7. La Jolla White Butterfly Chair, The Cross, $675
This butterfly wingback chair reimagined in sleek, white rattan is going to set hearts aflutter. The La Jolla White Butterfly chair will be the jewel in your furniture set that’s going to elevate everything around it. And in classic white, it will go with every container garden, toss cushion or colourful tumbler set. Indoors/outdoors design bonus: La Jolla isn’t overtly “patio,” so come fall, this side chair looks just as chic inside.
8. Geometric Modern Salad Plate Set, Pier 1, $27
Punchy strips of handmade paint patterns collide with the collage effect for what might be summer’s most covetable melamine tableware set. And the price? This four-piece set costs the same as one salad plate at CB2.
9. Mon Soleil Travel Towel, Nineteen Ten, $129
A delightful hybrid between what you want to look at and what you need to use: the Mon Soleil travel towel is a massive, bright gold throw-esque towel that has a flat woven top for lounging on and a terry cloth underside for quick drying.
10. Iris Planter and Chevron Stand, West Elm, $181
That geometric wire look from West Elm is practical as well as chic, and this whole charming trio will take up minimal space. Added styling bonus: plant pots at different heights add visual interest and cool layers to patios, which can be a difficult area to decorate when you’re working with 40 square feet or less.
